A deciduous, hardy, fast growing shrub usually grown for its autumn and winter colour, as the stems are brilliant red throughout the winter. It produces small white flowers in mid summer followed by small purple fruits. Looks really effective when mass planted or by a waterside in sun or partial shade on a moist or well drained soil.
